Episode 108: The Back 40
40 acres of severely overgrazed, depleted, and eroded land, and we're going to restore it! When I say severely depleted, that may be an understatement. There is zero topsoil left. It’s dusty in the dry season, and muddy when it rains. The sparse plants that are clinging on have been grazed down to the roots. The ground is nearly devoid of insects, birds, and small mammals. Land that’s in this poor of condition has a lot of room for improvement though, so let’s get to work. We're embarking on a new and massive habitat restoration project, and you get to come along for the journey. We’ve learned a lot, and made a lot of mistakes, over the last ten years of working on habitat restoration on our homestead. After all of those lessons learned, we get to start from scratch, apply our habitat restoration methods, and avoid many of the mistakes we’ve made in the past. It’s going to be exciting to see the transformation on this new property.
